Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) State Resource Locator

Regulated medical waste (RMW), also known as ‘biohazardous’ waste or 'infectious medical’ waste, is the portion of a healthcare facility's waste stream that may be contaminated by blood, body fluids or other potentially infectious materials, thus posing a significant risk of transmitting infection. Federal law does not provide an explicit definition of medical waste and it is not regulated at the federal level. Typically, State Departments of Health issue the regulations that determine which wastes are considered ‘regulated’ or require special handling (for more information, see HERC). Use our tool to learn how medical wastes are regulated in your state. Link to the rules and compliance resources and locate persons you can contact in your state agency for additional assistance.
